THDC India commissions second unit of 1 GW variable-speed pumped storage plant at Tehri

Power Generation  -  Jul 08,2025  -

THDC India Limited (THDCIL), a pioneering Public Sector Undertaking, has announced the successful commencement of the Commercial Operation Date (COD) process for the second 250 MW unit of its 1,000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand.

This milestone follows closely on the heels of the first 250 MW unit's successful operation, which began in June 2025.

The Tehri PSP holds the distinction of being India's first Variable Speed Pumped Storage facility and the largest of its kind implemented by any Central Public Sector Enterprise, highlighting THDCIL's leadership in deploying technologically advanced clean energy solutions.

The momentous event was virtually inaugurated by Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, Government of India, who lauded the commencement of the second unit's COD process.

The Tehri PSP comprises four reversible units of 250 MW each, culminating in a total installed capacity of 1,000 MW.
