TCG Group eyes commercial production of indigenous sodium-ion batteries

Manufacturing  -  Nov 19,2025  -

The TCG Group’s research arm is advancing plans to move from prototype to commercial production of indigenous sodium-ion batteries, with RISE-developed cells claiming rapid-charge capability and high energy density using locally sourced materials.

If commercialised at scale, sodium-ion technology could reduce dependence on lithium and critical imports while offering lower-cost storage for mobility and grid applications; however, commercialisation will require pilot lines, safety qualification, and supply-chain build-out for electrodes, electrolytes and cell casing.

Industry observers view this as part of a broader push by Indian conglomerates to localise next-generation battery chemistries to support EV adoption and grid flexibility.

The path to mass manufacturing remains contingent on demonstrated cycle life, cost curves and regulatory approvals
