Silchar greenfield airport construction to commence on December 1

Infrastructure  -  Jun 27,2025  -

Construction of the much-anticipated Silchar greenfield airport at Doloo tea estate land in Cachar district, Assam, is scheduled to begin on December 1, 2025.

This long-awaited project has been in the pipeline since 2019, with significant momentum gained in 2021-22 following land clearance operations. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is the proponent of this project, which aims to replace the existing Kumbhirgram airport, a defense facility that cannot accommodate the growing demands of civilian air traffic.

The project recently cleared a major hurdle with a peaceful public hearing conducted by the Assam Pollution Control Board on June 23, 2025.

This hearing saw overwhelming support for the airport, with approximately 95% of the submissions in favor, and the few objections primarily focusing on fair rehabilitation and environmental safeguards rather than opposing the project itself.

According to data available on the central government's Gati Shakti portal, the ambitious aviation project is projected to be completed by November 30, 2027.
