Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Unit I of the Ghatampur Thermal Power Project in Kanpur Nagar district, Uttar Pradesh.

Developed by Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power (NUPPL) -a joint venture between NLC India (51 percent) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (49 percent), the project features three supercritical thermal units of 660 MW each, totaling 1,980 MW.

Unit I is now operational, with the remaining two units expected to be commissioned during 2025–26. With a total investment of Rs 21,780.94 crore, the project is designed to meet the growing power demand in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states, strengthening energy security while incorporating sustainable technologies.

Spread across 998.81 hectares, the project is equipped with advanced environmental systems including selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and flue gas desulphurization (FGD) to curb NOx and SOx emissions, and a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) system to prevent wastewater discharge.
