Japan's Sharp to invest $3-5 billion in India’s semiconductor future

Manufacturing  -  Apr 29,2024  -

Japan’s Sharp Corporation is set to invest $3-5 billion in establishing a display fab semiconductor factory in India, as per reports. These display fabs are pivotal in manufacturing televisions and digital screens, with plans to set up a sprawling 1,000-acre facility, surpassing its Japanese counterpart in size.

Meetings with India’s Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw signal Sharp’s earnest intent. The company eyes serving both local and global markets from this Indian hub.

The proposed factory aims to manufacture cutting-edge Series 10 displays, positioning India as a vital player in the global semiconductor arena.

Sharp is in discussions with state governments in Telangana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra for land acquisition.

While approval timelines extend due to ongoing elections, Sharp’s initiative aligns with India’s push for self-sufficiency in semiconductors.

Notably, other global players, including Tower Semiconductors from Israel, have shown interest in India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
