India launches first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering facility at Vizhinjam port

Petroleum  -  Oct 28,2025  -

A milestone has been reached in Indian maritime fuel logistics with the launch of the first ship-to-ship (STS) LNG bunkering service at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala.

The facility, developed in partnership between APSEZ and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), enables vessels to refuel LNG while at sea, reducing the need for docking time and enhancing efficiency.

This step is significant in the context of shipping decarbonisation: LNG bunkering is one of the transition fuels being adopted by maritime operators seeking compliance with IMO-mandated emission reductions. By providing this capability, India signals readiness to support global liners on major east-west shipping arteries.

Vizhinjam’s deeper port draft and strategic southern location make it well suited to serve large container and cargo vessels — the bunkering facility adds to its offering beyond transshipment, making it a more comprehensive maritime services hub.

Success depends on how well the facility scales, how frequently vessels adopt LNG, and whether downstream logistics (supply, storage, bunkering operations) match international standards. If all goes well, it may boost the region’s port ecosystem and attract further investment in marine fuel infrastructure.
