The Government of India has approved a Rs. 18,662 crore project for the country’s first underwater road-cum-rail tunnel under the Brahmaputra river in Assam.

The project will connect key regions across the river through an integrated transport corridor.

The tunnel will accommodate both vehicular traffic and railway connectivity. It is aimed at improving connectivity and reducing travel time in the Northeast.

Construction will commence after completion of detailed project planning and clearances.
