HAL finalises mega contract worth Rs 62,370 crore for 97 Tejas Mark-1A jets for IAF

Petroleum  -  Sep 26,2025  -

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has finalized a landmark contract with the Ministry of Defence to supply 97 Tejas Mark-1A Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) jets to the Indian Air Force (IAF) at a cost of Rs 62,370 crore (excluding taxes). This marks the largest-ever order for an indigenous fighter aircraft platform.

The contract includes 68 single-seat fighters and 29 twin-seat trainers, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2027-28 and continue over six years.

The Tejas Mk-1A is intended to replace the IAF's ageing MiG-21 squadrons and help rebuild the IAF's fighter strength, which has fallen below sanctioned levels.

The advanced jets will feature over 64% indigenous content, including the UTTAM AEA radar and the Swayam Raksha Kavach electronic warfare suite, significantly bolstering India's defense self-reliance under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative.
