GRSE expands shipbuilding capacity with new shipyard outside Kolkata

Manufacturing  -  Jun 17,2025  -

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), a major government-owned company in the defense sector, is planning to build a brand new shipbuilding facility outside Kolkata. This move is to keep up with the increasing demand for ships, both for the defense forces and for commercial use, including exports.

In 2024, GRSE already increased its ability to build ships at the same time, going from 20 to 24 vessels. They aim to raise this to 28 ships by 2025 by bringing old, unused facilities back to life and renting out dry docks. As of March 31, 2025, GRSE has orders worth Rs 22,680 crore. The company's leader wants to secure an additional Rs 25,000 crore in new orders this financial year, aiming for a total order book of Rs 40,000 crore.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has shown interest in drawing investments for the defense industry. They are open to setting up an industrial park focused on defense, using the state's strong network of small and medium-sized businesses.
