Centre to modernise SCL Mohali with Rs. 4,500 crore investment

Manufacturing  -  Dec 01,2025  -

The central government has approved a Rs. 4,500 crore modernisation programme for SCL Mohali, aimed at upgrading semiconductor fabrication and testing capabilities. The investment will help the facility adopt advanced technologies and support sensitive strategic, industrial, and research requirements. This forms a key component of India’s semiconductor-ecosystem expansion roadmap.

The modernisation will include equipment upgrades, clean-room enhancements, and improvements in lithography, packaging, and validation capabilities. By strengthening SCL, the government aims to reduce external reliance for niche semiconductor needs in defence, automotive, and critical electronics. It also positions India to handle more sophisticated chip manufacturing processes in the future.

The initiative will generate high-skilled jobs and create partnerships with private semiconductor firms, national labs, and global technology partners. Strengthening SCL also improves India’s preparedness to attract additional fab investments under the semiconductor mission. The project underscores the government’s commitment to long-term technological self-reliance.
