Centre seeks DPRs for six ropeway corridors in Tamil Nadu under Parvatmala

Infrastructure  -  Nov 18,2025  -

The Centre has invited detailed project reports for six ropeway corridors across Tamil Nadu under the Parvatmala scheme, positioning cable-based transit as a fast, low-footprint solution for hilly and congested tourist corridors and for last-mile connectivity.

Ropeways are being presented to state planners as an alternative to road widening in heritage and hill zones, offering lower land-acquisition needs and quicker build times; projects typically combine public-private financing and concession-based operations.

For Tamil Nadu, ropeways could unlock new tourism clusters while easing pressure on fragile ecologies—however, success will hinge on viable demand projections, integration with existing transit and local stakeholder buy-in.

The DPR phase will test feasibility, ridership assumptions and tariff modelling before tenders follow. (source: government Parvatmala initiative briefings and state notifications)
