Centre grants approval for Rs 203 crore Mohali-Rajpura rail link project

Infrastructure  -  May 22,2025  -

The Central government has sanctioned the long-pending Mohali-Rajpura railway line project, allocating a budget of Rs 202.99 crore.

In a major boost to Punjab’s rail infrastructure, spanning approx. 24 km, the new railway line will directly link Mohali to Rajpura via Banur, with further connectivity extending towards Bathinda-Abohar-Jind-Rohtak.

The project also includes a five-km line from Rajpura to streamline train operations and eliminate the need for engine reversals when travelling to Chandigarh, enhancing both passenger convenience and logistics efficiency.

The announcement was shared by former Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur, who described the project as a “big gift from the Centre to Punjab."

Initially approved in 2017, the project had faced significant delays due to administrative and logistical issues. Its inclusion in the Northern Railways’ 2025–26 new line projects list marks its official revival.

The Centre has instructed Indian Railways to begin expressions of interest for the construction and allied works, igniting renewed hope among residents and businesses.
