Punjab to set up 40 MW canal-top solar project to boost renewable capacity

Power Generation  -  Oct 09,2025  -

The Punjab government has announced plans to establish a 40 MW canal-top solar power project, a major initiative to expand the state’s renewable energy portfolio while optimizing land use.

The project will utilize the surface area of irrigation canals for solar panels, generating clean energy without displacing agricultural land.

Officials stated that the canal-top system will not only produce electricity but also minimize water evaporation, offering dual environmental benefits.

The project is expected to attract private sector participation and help Punjab move closer to its target of achieving 30% renewable energy in its power mix by 2030.

This initiative underscores the state’s focus on sustainable growth and its contribution to India’s national clean energy transition.
