NHPC signs MoU for development of Pilot Green Hydrogen Technologies

Two agreements were struck in Kargil and Leh by NHPC, the largest hydropower company in the world, to develop green hydrogen technology.

According to the agreement signed for the Leh district, NHPC would look into the establishment of a prototype green hydrogen fuel cell-based microgrid, including hydrogen generation, to meet the electrical demands of the NHPC guest house at Nimmo Bazgo Power Station (Leh), which is inside NHPC premises. RK Mathur, the Union Territory of Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, was present when the agreements were signed.

According to the MoU signed for the Kargil district, the hydrogen produced in Kargil will be utilised in fuel cells, which can locally power two buses for up to 8 hours.

To meet the region’s needs for hydrogen in areas including mobility, transportation, heating, and micro-grid, NHPC will scale up hydrogen production on a commercial scale.

These two pilot projects will lay out a plan for future Green Hydrogen development and the subsequent reduction of carbon emissions in the transportation and heating sectors. They will also draw long-term investment into the Hydrogen economy.
