Leading oil company intends to construct Rs 1,000 crore sustainable aviation fuel plant at Panipat

To fulfil the rising demand for environmentally friendly fuel, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) intends to construct a Rs 1,000 crore ($122 million) sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant at Panipat in Haryana.

Should it be built, the decision to develop the nation’s first SAF facility would aid in addressing availability difficulties as worldwide supplies fall far short of what airlines require to satisfy decarbonization targets.

“This will be a successful venture. Because you won’t experience economies of scale unless the capacity is bigger, that’s why we thought of building such a large facility’, said SSV Ramakumar, head of research and development, in an interview.

Apart from IOC, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. is also planning to build a bio-ATF pilot plant at Mangalore using CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum’s technology using non edible oils and used cooking oil as feedstock
