EAF plants to be established to recycle steel in South India soon

The recycling facilities based on electric arc furnaces of steel behemoth Tata Steel may be built in a southern Indian car centre.

Tata Steel intends to establish comparable EAFs in other regions of the nation as part of its aim to reach 36 mtpa manufacturing capacity in its domestic operations.

The first of the steel recycling plants, with a capacity of 0.75 million tonnes per annum (mtpa), is now under construction in Ludhiana.

“If this model is successful, and in the next two years the Ludhiana plant will be operational, then we want to actually replicate this everywhere. So, the 36 to 40 million tonnes capacity (domestic) target can be reached by replicating this electric arc furnace route,” says TV Narendran, CEO & MD, Tata Steel Ltd.
