NHAI kicks off Rs 3,000 crore Muzaffarpur-Barauni four-lane highway project

Infrastructure  -  Jul 18,2025  -

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially commenced work on a crucial infrastructure project in Bihar: a 102-kilometer four-lane highway connecting Muzaffarpur and Barauni.

With an estimated investment of Rs 3,000 crore, this ambitious undertaking is poised to significantly alleviate traffic congestion on the existing two-lane National Highway-28 and dramatically improve regional connectivity across the state.

This long-awaited project, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for which has been finalized, is expected to see its tender process begin as early as next month. This marks a pivotal step towards modernizing Bihar's transport network and is a testament to the concerted efforts of both the state and central governments to bolster road infrastructure.

The Muzaffarpur-Barauni corridor is a vital link, and its upgrade to a four-lane highway is set to transform travel between these two key regions. Currently, the existing two-lane NH-28 is burdened by heavy traffic, leading to significant delays and safety concerns. The new four-lane alignment promises vastly reduced travel times, enhanced road safety, and smoother traffic flow.

The comprehensive project plan includes the construction of two major bridges, 16 smaller bridges, and 16 underpasses.
